The Atlanta Braves try to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole on Friday when they play Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Turner Field. It wont be easy, though, as the Braves face righty Zack Greinke, who was 15-4 this season and pitched to a 1.58 ERA in 12 starts since July 30. Greinke also won 12 of his final 14 decisions and was 7-0 with a 1.95 ERA over his last 10 starts on the road. "You feel good when Zack is pitching," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "If we can put some runs up for him and make some plays, were going to be in a position to at least be in a close game that youve got a chance to win." Greinke, who went 1-1 with a 6.48 ERA in three postseason starts with Milwaukee in 2011, tossed seven scoreless innings to beat the Braves in his only appearance against them this season, but is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts at Turner Field. "Theyve got a bunch of power, and you kind of have to locate your pitches," said Greinke about the Braves. "So I think those are the two main things. If you dont locate them, they could do some damage." Clayton Kershaw pitched Los Angeles to an early lead in this best-of-five set on Thursday, as he put forth a Cy Young-worthy effort with a 12-strikeout performance, and behind an early offensive outburst, the Dodgers were able to steal home field advantage with a 6-1 victory in Game 1. The Dodgers plated five runs over their first four turns at the plate to provide more than enough support for Kershaw (1-0), who cut down the Atlanta hitters one after another in scattering just a run on three hits over a dominant seven-inning stint. The NL-West Champions totaled 11 hits, with nine of them coming off Kris Medlen (0-1). The Braves starter lasted just four-plus innings and was charged with five runs -- including a two-run homer to Adrian Gonzalez in the third inning that all but silenced the home crowd for the remainder of the evening. Yasiel Puig had two hits, as did Mark Ellis and A.J. Ellis, who each scored a run and finished with an RBI. Skip Schumaker contributed a sacrifice fly in the first postseason win for Mattingly. "It feels good, obviously to put a win on the board really in a series, try to get that first game kind of under your belt as far as a team, not really worrying about myself so much," said Mattingly. "But feel good about putting a win on the board." The Braves, coming off their first NL East title since their run of 14 straight ended in 2005, struck out 15 times and managed just five hits in Game 1. Getting the call for Atlanta in Game 2 will be lefty Mike Minor, who was 0-4 in five September starts and allowed 18 earned runs over his final 39 innings. Overall, though, he was 13-9 with a 3.21 ERA. "I hate putting labels on guys, especially young guys," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I think when youve got six, seven years in the big leagues and been successful, thats when I think we should put labels or say this guy is an ace or a No. 1, or youve won some hardware to back it up. But I think Mike Minor is a really, really good pitcher." In five starts versus the Dodgers Minor is 1-1 with a 2.32 ERA. Atlanta won five of its seven regular season matchups with the Dodgers this season. However, these teams havent met in the postseason since the Braves swept the NLDS back in 1996. MILWAUKEE -- Bobcats coach Steve Clifford liked his teams defence just as much as its offence. Jannero Pargo scored 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Charlotte Bobcats erase a 21-point deficit and rally for an 83-76 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night. The Bobcats outscored the Bucks 33-9 in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 20-2 run sparked by Pargos 10 points. "That final group, obviously we scored 33, but we started defending," Clifford said. "Even in the third quarter, our defence was a lot better. Then when those guys went in, they stayed with the defence. We got stops, we got rebounds and then we were able to get out and get some easy baskets." Ramon Sessions, a former Buck, added seven points during the surge. "The two veteran guards, Ramon and Jannero, were really good," Clifford said. "Theyve been around. They know how to get ready to play. They take good care of themselves and they love to play." Blowing a 21-point lead didnt sit well with new Bucks head coach Larry Drew. "We came out flat in the third, but we did pick it up," he said. "We just didnt respond to their run. That was the most disturbing part about it, in not responding and just seeing the body language when the team got on the run. Were going to have to be better, much, much better." Caron Butler led the Bucks with 18 points, but was ejected with 12.7 seconds left. He scored 12 points during a 21-8 run bridging the second and third quarters to help the Bucks build their biggest lead, 58-37. Butler was arguing with referee Steven Anderson about the foul called on John Henson who was fighting Bismack Biyombo for a rebound at the Bobcats basket. "It was a physical game the whole game," Henson said. "A bang-bang play like that, I was kind of surprised on the call. But, thats the way the game goes." Biyombo grabbed 21 rebounds starting at centre for Al Jefferson, who sprained his right ankle in the Bobcats 86-75 loss to the Miami Heat on Friday. Both Halep and Petkovic will now play in their first-ever Grand Slam semifinals. The fourth-seeded Halep handled the 27th-seeded Russian Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-2 on Court Lenglen and the 28th-seeded former top-10 star Petkovic played her best match of the fortnight in whipping the 10th-seeded Italian Errani 6-2, 6-2 on Chatrier in a pair of matches that started under overcast skies following a three-hour rain delay. The veteran Kuznetsova was slowed by a left leg injury on Day 11. Errani was the Roland Garros runner-up to Maria Sharapova two years ago and lost to eventual champion Serena Williams in the semifinals last year, while the two-time major champion Kuznetsova titled here in 2009 and was the runner- up in 2006. The graceful Halep is now 3-2 lifetime versus Kuznetsova, while Petkovic improved to 2-1 against Errani.dddddddddddd The 22-year-old Halep hadnt reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal until this years Australian Open. Shes captured a whopping seven WTA titles over the last 13 months, second only to Williams. Halep, however, is the only woman to have won titles on clay, grass and hard courts during that stretch. The 26-year-old one-time world No. 9 Petkovic reached the quarterfinals at three of the four major events in 2011 before injuries derailed her in 2012 and for the first half of last year, dropping her as low as 177th in the world. Halep and Petkovic will meet on Thursday, with the Romanian leading their all-time series, 2-1. Thursdays other semi will pit a seventh-seeded Sharapova against 18th-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Sharapova completed the career Grand Slam with a title here in 2012 and lost to Williams in last years finale. The 20-year-old Bouchard has reached the final four at both Grand Slam events in 2014. The 27-year-old Sharapova is 2-0 lifetime against Bouchard, including a second-round win here in Paris last year. ' ' '

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin Kaymer posted a bogey-free, 5-under 67 on Friday and he remained one stroke clear of the field after two rounds of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Kaymer ended 36 holes at 13-under-par 131. His total of 131 matched his own 36-hole scoring record at this event. Kaymer first posted that total in 2008, when he went on to the first of his three victories at this tournament. Thomas Pieters matched Kaymers 67 to remain one stroke off the pace at minus-12 on the National Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy aced the par-3 15th and that propelled him to a 6- under 66. The three-time runner-up is alone in third place at 11-under 133. James Morrison also carded a 67 and Peter Uihlein joined him in fourth place at minus-9 with a 4-under 68. Alexander Levy (70) and Richard Green (68) are one stroke back at 8-under-par 136. Ottawas general manager said hes had discussions about trading his captain but will not make a move unless he can get an acceptable return. "I dont think when you trade a player of Jasons calibre that you ever win," Murray said on Thursday. "I think we try to get the best return we can and then if its not satisfactory we cant do it and he has a year left on his contract." Spezza had 23 goals and 66 points in 75 games last season. He has 251 goals and 687 points in 686 career NHL games. Spezza has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of US$7 million. He has a limited no-trade clause, which allowed him to submit a list of ten teams where he would not want to play. Its believed he would prefer to move out of Canada and the glare of the spotlight that comes from playing north of the border. Ideally, its believed Murray would like to get a player who can come in and play on the teams top two lines, a highly-ranked prospect and perhaps a first-round pick at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, seeing as the Senators dont have one this year. Murray said he has heard from teams, and speculation has Anaheim and St. Louis as the front-runners. "All we do in our business is investigate when theres a request by a player," said Murray. "You investigate possibilities and you talk about it and negotiate and when you negotiate it sometimes takes a week. Not very often its one phone call, sometimes many and in this case it appears that there will be many." The 31-year-old Spezza has spent 11 seasons with the Senators, the last as captain, but at the conclusion of this season it was clear he was unhappy and rumours of a trade request soon surfaced. From the moment Spezza arrived in Ottawa as a 19-year-old, he has been a lightning rod for criticism by both fans and media and it appears hes grown tired of it all. "The only explanation I have is that he would like to try something different," said Murray. "He thinks that the fingers are pointed at him quite often in Ottawa. Winning or losing he gets credit or he gets bblamed and I think he feels its time to do something else.dddddddddddd" When asked whether or not he felt that was a legitimate cause for a trade request Murray said, "thats not for me to judge." Its not the first time a star player has requested a move under Murrays watch. The Senators traded Dany Heatley to San Jose in 2009 after Heatley requested a move. "Im always disappointed that we havent been able to satisfy players, whether it be Jason or any other player that has ever asked for a trade," said Murray. "But its probably a little more common place now." With the departure of longtime captain Daniel Alfredsson last season, Spezza was the reins of the club. Expectations were that the added responsibility might translate to better play away from the puck. Over the course of the season it appeared head coach Paul MacLean grew frustrated with his captains play and that the two didnt always see eye-to-eye. "Jason told me this at the end, he understood what Paul was trying to do and thats not the reason (he wants a trade)," said Murray. "Thats basically what he told me." Despite the NHL entry draft being just over a week away Murray says he feels no sense of urgency to complete the trade. At this point all it entails is a little more work on his part. "Its just another number of phone calls you have to make on a daily basis almost to see if you can do something to satisfy the player and the team," said Murray. "Let me assure you were looking to satisfy our hockey team. Were looking to win here. Were trying to get return that will give us that chance. It just makes it a little bit busier thats all." Notes: The Senators have signed C Mike Hoffman to a one-year, two-way deal. C Stephane DaCosta turned down an offer by the Senators and appears poised to play in the KHL this coming season. Assistant general manager Pierre Dorion admitted the team has held discussions with G Robin Lehner regarding a contract extension for the restricted free agent. The Senators have made an offer to Milan Michalek and are confident a deal can be made with the veteran winger. ' ' '

Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton has decided to appeal his 15-game suspension for punching and injuring unsuspecting Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik. Thorntons agent, Anton Thun, confirmed in an email that his client was appealing. The NHL Players Association announced it had informed the league of that plan before the 48-hour deadline to do so passed. As laid out in the collective bargaining agreement, the appeal first goes to commissioner Gary Bettman. If Bettman upholds the suspension, Thornton and the NHLPA can then elect to appeal to a neutral arbitrator because it is for six or more games. Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta is the only player to use this appeals process under the new CBA, and no player has gone to the neutral arbitrator. Bettman upheld Kaletas 10-game suspension for an illegal hit on Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Jack Johnson, issuing a 17-page decision. Thornton got 15 games for slew-footing Orpik to the ice and landing gloved punches to his head during a game Dec. 7. The Pittsburgh defenceman was knocked unconscious and has not played since because of a concussion. Vice-president of player safety Brendan Shanahan said it was not a spontaneous action by Thornton because he tried to confront Orpik earlier after Orpik injured Bruins winger Loui Eriksson with a hit. Appearing on TSN Drive with Dave Naylor on TSN 1050, Thun said he could not talk about the case before it was presented in the appeal hearing but did mention he felt there was more than one reason for Thornton to appeal his suspension. "We believe there are a variety of reasons to appeal it and part of it is just clarity… The clarity is not just Shawn but for the other players in the league." Thun was also asked if he was aware of when the appeal hearing will take place with Bettman. "To be the best of my knowledge the meeting will be later this week, Thursday and Friday have been thrown around but at this point in time it hasnt been confirmed." Thornton had not been fined or suspended before. Several general managers and coaches around the NHL have spoken in support of Thorntons character in his career before this incident. The fifth-seeded Monfils earlier beat sixth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Monfils improved to 4-0 against Nieminen. Monfils dropped his serve in the second set, before breaking Nieminen twice in the deciding set. Janowicz had 16 aces compared to eight for Gasquet, and both players dropped serve once. Defending champion Gasquet is chasing his 11th career title. Monfils won the tournament four years ago and will aim on Sunday for his fifth career title, but his first since winning indoors at Stockholm three years ago. Three of his titles were on indoor hard-courts. The final will be the 10th meeting between the 27-year-oolds, with Monfils leading 5-4.dddddddddddd. "Gael is an incredible player, he does everything well," Gasquet said. "Its always a bit weird to play a friend in a final, but I am looking forward to it. I think its the best final we could have here in Montpellier and I hope it will be a good match." Gasquet, ranked ninth, is Frances No. 1 player ahead of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, while Monfils has slipped to 30th after persistent knee injuries. "Richard has so much talent (and) he is not (in the) top 10 for nothing. He has improved a lot physically and mentally lately, which makes him a difficult player to beat," Monfils said. "Hes going to be the favourite. He is the top seed and the defending champion. I am really looking forward to playing my buddy in the final, it makes it more fun." ' ' '

This story was tired during round 2, but the media keeps hammering it like it has the narrative of a Philip Roth novel. The passing of St. Louis mother was tragic, as is any unexpected death. Or death in general. Death is tragic. Thats why tragedies end in death. This is a narrative trope older than the playoff beard. But did it "galvanize" the Rangers efforts? Perhaps. But when reporters answer their own questions by asking players, "Did the passing of Martys mum bring this team closer together?" the story is being written and not reported. Its one of the tragic flaws of sports journalism. Additionally, part of the story being left out is how St. Louis sulked like a petulant child when not named to Canadas Olympic team, played poorly when added to the squad justifying managements decision to leave him off in the first place as he did not fit into their system, and then forced his trade to New York. Good player and teammate? Maybe. Virtuous hero of a tragic narrative? Hardly.Celebrities(Source: FameFlynet Pictures)Welcome to TMZs NHL final. With the Stanley Cup being played in New York and Los Angeles, the opportunity presents itself for endless celeb spotting. Coverage will no doubt be tirelessly freckled with shots of Robert De Niro, Michael J. Fox, and Wayne Gretzkys daughter. "Oh hey, look! Its venerable character actor ?eljko Ivanek! He watches hockey just like a normal person!" I fully expect at least one, if not two, Scott Oake "Inside Hockey" features on Matthew Perrys beer league for displaced Canadians in L.A. If somehow Jay-Zed and Beyoncé make it rinkside, NHL media types might actually spontaneously combust, leaving a trail of iPhones and unwritten columns about who will play Marty St. Louis in the movie version of the postseason smoldering in the press box.Major Markets(Source: cgodley - Hollywood Reporter)Yes, L.A. and New York are the two largest media markets in the league, so ratings for this final should get a bump from years past, at least stateside. But in actuality, a Stanley Cup final on NBCSN 7 or whoever it is who televises hockey poorly in the United States these days still rates lower than a Reba marathon on CMT. Add in the fact that the NBA finals feature a rematch of last years epic Heat-Spurs series, a compelling Lebron as Jordan narrative, and the dichotomy of the Heats talents in South Beach and the Spurs team first philosophy, some Americans might not even find time to watch Reba. Certainly a major market clash is good for the NHL, and good for hockey. But it wont be the epic sea change in the sports national visibility and popularity that the media will portray it as.Canadians (Source: nhl.com/kings)In the absence of Canadian teams in the final, the nationalist hockey media will do its best to attach Canada to the series narrative as best they can. Theyll count the amount of Canadians on each team. Theyll do a feature on the Sutters, how theyre cheering on Darryl from Viking, but cant make it to the games because the spring crop needs a plantin. There will be mention of how many Canadian Olympians are on each team. Stephen Harper will somehow make an appearance. Therell be something about a loonie at centre ice. And, of course, the annual Bettman-MacLean smug-off where Ron will ask about Quebec City and Gary will wish he were still with the NBA. If it goes 7 games, the contrived Canadiana will get thicker than a beer commercial. The Unmentioned(Source: Dirk Shadd - Times)The final will be notable not just for the tired recycled stories of rounds past, but also the issues facing hockey that will not be mentioned. Sure, a wedding isnt the place to discuss your partners flaws, but during its second biggest moment of the year (to the inexplicably popular outdoor games) certainly some of the sports challenges could be included in the pre-game and intermission discourse. It would be interesting, and beneficial, to have the pundits debate why fighting barely exists in the playoffs yet is apparently crucial to the game, if Zenon Konopkas PED use is an isolated case or hockeys dirty little secret, or have an open dialogue about concussion protocol, or the lack thereof, especially in the postseason. And Dominic Moores story is a truly heartbreaking tale, but some moment should be found to mention how it has been ten years since Todd Bertuzzi ended his brothers career, how Dominic was at times ostracized from NHL circles because of it, and how the case has yet to go to trial. But, you know, Don Cherry trying to pronounce Anze Kopitar is interesting in its own way.The Stanley Cup final matchup promises an entertaining series. Both the Rangers and Kings are built around speed, hard forechecking, and timely goaltending. There will be plenty of stories that will grow organically. This is the beauty of sport; the story writes itself, and that story will be best told if its storytellers eschew the contrived and indulge in its evolution. Buck Buchanan Jersey . Seven years of losing has brought many different faces, players and management, to the annual pre-season get-to-know-the-team round up.MINSK, Belarus -- Wanting Team Canada to improve game by game at the world hockey championship, coach Dave Tippett thought the quarter-final effort against Finland was the best yet. It was also the last, as a couple of third-period mistakes led to a 3-2 loss Thursday at Chizhovka Arena and Canadas elimination from the tournament. "I use a phrase all the time that every play counts," Tippett said. "Every play counts and unfortunately we had a couple go against us." The play that counted the most for Canada was a turnover by defenceman Tyler Myers, who tried to pass it off the wall to Kyle Turris. Jori Lehtera got in the way, setting up Iiro Pakarinen for the game-winner with just 3:08 left. A downtrodden Myers said everyone saw what happened and didnt feel he needed to explain. Turris, who scored Canadas first goal, took the blame. "I was yelling at him, Im open in the middle, Im open in the middle, and when he passed to the middle, the guy stepped in between," Turris said. "It was my fault. I was yelling at him to move it to me, and the guy stepped in the way and went the other way. I should have had it." It was a game that Canada felt it should have had. Holding a 2-1 lead after two periods on goals by Turris and Mark Scheifele, the Canadians were in control despite a strong game from Finnish goaltender Pekka Rinne. One bad bounce 28 seconds into the third changed everything. Finlands Juuso Hietanen let a slapshot fly that hit Ben Scrivenss right arm, the back of his blocker, and then the shaft of his stick before trickling over the goal-line. "Its a terrible goal to give up," said Scrivens, who stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced. "Its deflating for the team. Thats squarely on me. Its really tough to swallow right now." This was the fifth straight year Canada lost in the quarter-finals at this tournament. Making it more difficult to accept was that this squad of NHL third-liners and potential stars of the future bounced back perfectly from an opening shootout loss to France. Six straight victories followed. The Finland game easily could have been one, too. "We still had our shifts in their end, our chances," captain Kevin Bieksa said. "We had a couple breakdowns. We knew going into this game that the Finns were a team that would sit back and capitalize on our mistakes, and they made us pay tonight." Tippett addressed his players after the loss but couldnt offer much in the way of an uplifting sentiment. "Its a tough situation for everybody," Tippett said. "Its not the result you want. We came here to win, we didnt come here to lose in the quarter-ffinals.dddddddddddd Theres not much to say. We didnt accomplish what we wanted to accomplish." All because of a few bad breaks. Finlands first goal 6:06 in, which came on the power play with Myers in the box for roughing, happened after an attempted point shot deflected off penalty-killer Joel Wards stick and right to Olli Palola for his third of the tournament. That didnt deflate Canada, which kept putting pucks on Rinne, who finished with 36 saves on 38 shots. The attempts came from everywhere and almost everyone, as 17 of 20 skaters had at least one on net. "I thought we played some really good hockey throughout the whole game," Myers said. "I think we were right there. It was our game to lose. Its never a good feeling to have it happen like that." One problem was going 0-for-5 on the power play. Had Canada buried a couple of those chances, like Brayden Schenns shot very early that hit the crossbar, it would have been a very different game. Canadas players and Tippett were quick to credit the Finns, who played their brand of hockey well and pounced on mistakes. "We worked extremely hard (for) 60 minutes," Hietanen said. "We knew that we were going to get our chances and now we scored a couple goals." Finland coach Erkka Westerlund was proud of how his team responded and came back from the 2-1 deficit. "In (the) third period we showed the mental strength," Westerlund said. "We call it in Finland sisu." The third period was Canadas weakest of the game. "Its frustrating. I thought we had a great first two periods, we were outshooting them badly, had great opportunities," Turris said. "If we played the way we did in the first two to finish the game, I think we would have come out with a better outcome." Instead, Scrivens lamented Finlands goaltending being better than his and not holding up his end of the bargain to teammates. And Myers was left with the same feelings he had much of this NHL season with the Buffalo Sabres. "Its never fun losing," Myers said. "I did too much of that this year." This wasnt a loss that had Canadas players wondering about their overall play. But that was no consolation. "Its just the way it is," Tippett said. "We played a good game tonight. Unfortunately, we lost." Notes: Alex Burrows returned to Canadas lineup after missing the final two preliminary-round games with a leg injury. Burrows was the 13th forward and played just 4:11 with no shifts in the third period. ... Finlands roster features just three NHL players: Rinne, Olli Jokinen of the Winnipeg Jets and Erik Haula of the Minnesota Wild. ' ' '

SEATTLE -- Jermain Defoe gave Toronto FC its moneys worth on Saturday. Defoe, one of Torontos marquee off-season signings, scored both of his teams goals in a 2-1 win against the Seattle Sounders to start TFCs Major League Soccer season. It was Torontos first win to open a season since 2009, and only the second in its seven-year existence. "I thought the guys were magnificent in the first half when it came to their football and magnificent in the second half when it came to their desire and their character," said Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen. Defoe, who hadnt scored since Jan. 11 for former club Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, needed just 24 minutes to secure the win for his new team. He spoke earlier this week about his desire to perform well in case England coach Roy Hodgson was watching. With his two-goal performance on Saturday, Defoe has renewed hope for inclusion in Englands squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this summer. "To score two goals on your debut, its a dream," Defoe said. "The England thing is obviously going to be at the back of my mind." After early pressure from the Sounders, Defoe made a run between two Seattle defenders in the 17th minute. Jonathan Osorio, on the ball in midfield, slipped a perfectly weighted pass through the gap, and Defoe nestled the ball into the goal. Seven minutes later, Defoe picked up a loose ball after a Sounders giveaway near their own penalty area. He found space to cut to the right and fire another shot past goalkeeper Stefan Frei. "The first goal was a great ball, and you just have to finish it off," Defoe said. "The second half, we showed great character because they put us under a lot of pressure. Youve got to do that sometimes away from home." Seattle began the second half as it did the first, pressuring Torontos goal. Another big-name signing, Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar, made his first important intervention in the 53rd minute. He fell to his right and stuck out his left leg, deflecting a close-range shot from Obafemi Martins out for a corner kick. However, the Sounders pressure would eventually pay off. Seattles own Designated Players, Martins and Clint Dempsey, combined down the right flank in the 68th minute, putting Dempsey in space on top of the penalty area. The U.S. international took a settling touch with his left foot before slamming a right-footed shot low and to Cesars left. The CenturyLink Field crowd of 38,441 came to life, and the Seattle attack continued to press. Torontos back line held, helped by several foul calls by referee Ioannis Stavrides close to its goal, despite dropping into a defensive shell for the last 15 minutes of the game. Notably, Seattle substitute Kenny Cooper got behind the defence with five minutes remaining, but his central pass went wayward under pressure from Cesar rushing out of his goal. Osorio headed clear a tame Sounders corner kick in stoppage time, which effectively closed out the match. "Theres no doubt in my mind that as the season goes on, well continue to improve, and our football will be good," said Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley, another one of the clubs big off-season signings . "Tonight was different. Tonight was about the spirit, the mentality and doing whatever it took to come away with three points." Nelsen downplayed the result throughout his post-game talk with media, choosing instead to expound his desire for consistency over a long MLS season. "Weve got so much to improve on. Were not stupid," he said. "What I like about this team is their heart, their character, their desire -- that they want to win. Thats what you hope for. You build your house on that type of foundation." Toronto (1-0) plays its first home game of the season on March 22 when it hosts D.C. United at BMO Field. Seattle (1-1) takes to the road for the first time the same day, playing the Montreal Impact. Billy Turner Super Bowl Jersey . The Oilers agreed to terms with the 24-year-old on a US$3.675-million, one-year contract Friday that puts him in line to make him a restricted free agent again next off-season. Schultz said the one-year deal means he has to perform. "I just got to prove that Im worth that longer-term money and they want me here for a longer term," Schultz said in a phone interview. "I want to be here and Ive got to make sure I improve my defensive game and know I can play against other teams top lines without them worrying about me out there and being able to put me out in all situations." General manager Craig MacTavish said signing Schultz to a one-year deal was a chance to buy the organization more time to evaluate him. MacTavish added it was difficult to agree on a longer-term value given the small sample size of the defencemans career. "We as an organization wanted a little bit more information, fully aware that information can be expensive," MacTavish said at a news conference in Edmonton. Schultz led Oilers defencemen in ice time in 2013-14 at over 23 minutes a game. His offensive numbers are no problem, as he put up 11 goals and 22 assists in 74 games. The Kelowna, B.C., native, enjoyed the bigger role rookie coach Dallas Eakins gave him last season. "Im more comfortable," Schultz said. "I felt as the year went on last year, I got better in my own end and on the penalty kill and all that. Its always something Ive got to work on. I think Im improving and hopefully start this year off solid and keep er going." MacTavish took issue with the notion that Schultz was weak in the defensive end. "Ive always believed that hes very good defensively," MacTavish said. "He showed me at the end of last year that he really was managing the decisions that you need the experience to manage the decisions on when to go, when to stay backk, when to probe offensively, when to get back.ddddddddddddquot; The Oilers won the Schultz sweepstakes in the summer of 2012 after the Ducks 2008 draft pick didnt sign with Anaheim when he was done playing at the University of Wisconsin. During the 2012-13 lockout, Schultz was the AHLs leading scorer with 18 goals and 30 assists in 34 games for the Oklahoma City Barons. MacTavish said a rookie defenceman leading the AHL in points is something that only happens to great players and believes his ceiling is beyond great. "I think that Justin has Norris Trophy potential, and I dont think there are too many people that would disagree with me in that regard," MacTavish said. In 122 career NHL games, Schultz has 19 goals and 41 assists for 60 points. During that time, the Oilers have continued their playoff drought, which dates to 2007, the year after Edmonton lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup final. "Its obviously a work in progress," Schultz said. "I knew we werent going to win right away. But weve got all the talent in the world and its just a matter of time before we start turning things around." Beyond Schultz, the Oilers have been building around first-round picks Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle. Schultz could soon be joined on the blue-line by 2013 first-rounder Darnell Nurse. For now, the Oilers defence is made up of Schultz, captain Andrew Ference, Martin Marincin, Jeff Petry, free-agent additions Mark Fayne and Keith Aulie and trade acquisition Nikita Nikitin. Nikitin is the highest-paid of that group going into the first season of a $9-million, two-year deal that counts $4.5 million against the salary cap. If Schultz can continue his career progression, hes likely headed toward a much richer pay day. In the process, he hopes to help the Oilers make the playoffs. "Ive only had two years in the NHL," he said. "Its a big year for me next year, for our team." ' ' '

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- P.J. Hairstons career is over at North Carolina. The school said Friday that it wont seek Hairstons reinstatement from the NCAA after the junior committed several rule violations. Hairston hasnt played all season while the school and NCAA worked to resolve eligibility questions, many stemming from the use of cars linked to a felon and party promoter in Durham earlier this year. Hairston has practiced with the team and has been on the bench for home games. The NCAA cleared senior Leslie McDonald to return earlier this week after he missed the first nine games due to receiving improper benefits in a related case. In a statement, UNC coach Roy Williams said he was "extremely disappointed" for Hairston, his family and team. "P.J. made mistakes and I was very disappointed by his actions and now he is suffering the very difficult consequences," Williams said. "He is not a bad kid. He just made some mistakes." Hairston led the team in scoring last year at about 15 points per game while shooting 40 per cent from 3-point range. The 6-foot-5 swingman decided to return for his junior season instead of entering the NBA draft in the spring, but ultimately never made it back on the court for the Tar Heels. Authorities twice cited him during the off-season while driving rental vehicles linked to Haydn Patrick "Fats" Thomas of Durham to raise the possibility of an improper benefits violation. The schools announcement didnt spell out the specific violations, only that there were several. "Unfortunately P.J. made a number of mistakes that placed his eligibility at risk and the universitys joint review with the NCAA made it clear that seeking reinstatement from P.J. would not be possible," athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. "The university thanks him for his contributions to Carolina Basketball." The No. 14 Tar Heels are coming off an 86-83 home loss to Texas, though McDonald scored 15 points and hit four 3-pointers in his return to the lineup. North Carolina plays Davidson on Saturday. The 25th-ranked Frenchwoman broke back twice in the second set before Bacsinszky saved a match point at 5-4.MIAMI -- Without as much as a run-scoring hit, the Philadelphia Phillies put up enough offence to send the Miami Marlins to a milestone loss. Darin Ruf and Kevin Frandsen drove in runs in the first inning, and the Phillies beat Miami 2-1 on Tuesday night to hand the Marlins their 100th loss of the season. Ruf drew a bases-loaded walk, Frandsen followed with an RBI groundout and that was all the offence that the Phillies would need. The Phillies are now 6-47 this season when scoring two runs or less, and two of those wins are against the Marlins. "Its more fun when we win," Phillies starter Zach Miner said. Michael Stutes (3-1) got the win by working a scoreless fifth inning in relief, and Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 29th save in 36 chances. Its the second triple-digit-loss season in Marlins history, joining the 108-defeat year in 1998. Mike Redmond, the first-year Marlins manager, was a rookie on that team, playing in 37 games. "I dont think were going to lose 100 games next year," Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich said. "No one thinks that way." Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez (4-6) allowed five hits and struck out five in seven innings. Justin Ruggiano had two hits for Miami, one of them an RBI double where he was thrown out at third. It was the 44th time this season the Marlins (58-100) have scored less than two runs. Theyre 2-42 in those games. "I was trying to come up with something clever to say, when you lose your 100th game of the season," Redmond said. "All I could come up with is, at least it was by one run." Alvarez gave up a one-out double to Jimmy Rollins in the first, then walked the next three batters -- Chase Utley, Domonic Brown and finally Ruf, the last two of those free passes coming on 3-2 pitches, and the one to Ruf allowing Rollins to score. Frandsens ground ball brought in Utley, and Alvarez got another grounder to escape without more trouble. The Marlins answered in the second with a run off Miner. Giancarlo Stanton singled to start the inning, and scored on Ruggianos double to left-centre. But the relay fromm Brown to Rollins to Freddy Galvis caught Ruggiano trying to get to third, and the potential for a bigger inning ended there.dddddddddddd "That was big at the time," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "A runner would have been in scoring position, that came in handy. Jimmy got the throw right down there on the bag. Good alert play." Miner left after working four innings, giving up four hits and striking out three. He also got the second big-league hit of his career after an odd sequence -- he fouled one off the backstop in the second inning and nearly hit teammate Cesar Hernandez, then lined the next pitch right up the box, narrowly missing Alvarez. For the Marlins, the 100-loss mark was one that they were on pace for pretty much all season proved to ultimately be unavoidable. "I wasnt sure what to expect coming in as far as the players and how many games we would lose, whatever," Redmond said. "Obviously, nobody wants to be a part of that. I guess if there was anybody who was prepared for this season out here, it was me -- since Ive been through it." Those 98 Marlins finished 52 games back in the standings. Five years later, the franchise won its second World Series. "As we grow as an organization and get better and improve, well always remember where we started from," Redmond said. "Thats something I remember from 98." NOTES: Sandberg is now 19-18 as Philadelphias manager. ...
